In mid-May, the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S. issued notification that effective August 1, 2024, several animals, including puppies under the age of 6 months, would be banned from importation, primarily as a means to prevent the reintroduction and spread of rabies. The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and various other groups including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), Pets Canada and the American Kennel Club (AKC) have strongly requested that the CDC re-consider its new rule.  The CDC has relaxed some conditions, but it means that as of August 1st, Canadian breeders of any dog breed, will not be able to send their pups to new homes in the U.S. until those puppies are at least 6 months old.

The CKC is urging its members to write letters to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), outlining the following:

• The impact that the CDC importation rule will have on you and your work as a responsible breeder or purebred dog enthusiast.

• Reiterating the concerns expressed by CKC and AKC in their recent letters.

• Reiterating the requests made by the CKC and AKC in their recent letters.

 

To help with writing a letter, the CKC has created a LETTER TEMPLATE you can use. The CKC asks that its members keep their requests to the CDC consistent with what CKC and AKC have put forward, which strengthens the concerns and recommended solutions.
